I grew up in the cemetery industry, starting as a teenager in a large memorial park outside of Boston where I literally learned the industry at my father’s knee.
My higher education included a major in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania followed by an MBA at what is now the Questrom School of Business at Boston University.
I spent the early part of my career consulting in process improvement activities at multiple hospitals across the Northeast ultimately leading to several positions as a department head, Chief Operating officer and CEO. During this period, I also served as co-chair of the Health Care and Public Health Sector for the Department of Homeland Security. This sector included Mass Fatality Management, of which I was a member.
After my career in turnaround management in Health Care I reentered the Death Care Industry with the purchase of Brooklawn Memorial Park, a small cemetery and crematory in Maine. Over the years I restructured the company and invested heavily in the facilities and operational excellence of the crematory, growing it into the largest Crematory facility in Maine. I grew from operating two retorts to installing 5 retorts in a new facility. Brooklawn performed just under 4,000 cremations a year, capturing 25% of the Maine market, a market that includes 15 crematories.
Along the way we developed the first computerized tracking system in the state and my staff was certified as cremation operators (also a first) long before it was required. A highly focused quality assurance program grew to include formal policies and procedures that require double authentication of all deceased at every critical junction. While I wrote the original tracking software, we soon grew into professional tracking barcode software and added cameras to record each step in the process. Each opportunity for improvement identified led to the revamping and improvement of systems.
After I sold Brooklawn in 2021 Funeral Directors began to call me and ask for help. And the Cremation Consultant was born.
